Farmers Markets

I love seeing all the flowers blooming this time of year!  Even though my allergies kick up, I just cannot resist the opportunity to bring flowers into my home.

Sometimes I pick up flowers from the florist or supermarket, but usually they are from my local farmers market.

When I visited France a couple of years ago, one of the mose memorable things was all of the open air markets.  All the beautiful fruit and vegetables nicely arranged for shoppers.

The farmers market near my home does not look like this, but they do have lots of great produce and local baked items.

I love to visit farmers’ markets whenever I travel to get a real taste of the local flavor.   Most of the cities here in Southern California have markets once a week.   It is a great way to support the local businesses.  If you know of a good one, please let me know so I can add it to my list and plan a trip!

Caramel Custard Flan Cupcakes

These Caramel Custard Flan Cupcakes are a fun dessert and go nicely with a Mexican dish.

Caramel

  • 2 cups white sugar
Custard
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 (14 ounce) can  sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Cake

  • 1 box of Yellow cake mix plus ingredients for packaged mix.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees Farenheit.  Grease muffin tins with oil or Crisco.  Heat the 2 cups of sugar over medium heat in a saucepan until it liquifies into caramel.  Stir it often so it does not burn. When liquid, pour into prepared muffin tin.
Next prepare the custard by mixing eggs, condensed milk, evaporated milk and vanilla in a bowl.  Pour this mixture over the caramel, filling muffin receptors about 1/2 full.  Then prepare the cake mix according to package directions.  Pour over the custard mixture leaving about 1/4 inch of the tin emplty for cupcake expansion.

Bake for 17-19 minutes.

Let cool about 15 minutes and invert on a serving dish.  Don’t let them cool too much or the caramel will stick to the pan.  Keep refrigerated until served.  You can add whipped cream if you like.

And so it begins…

So finally after months of thinking about doing this, I am actually doing this.  Just a place to share my thoughts, ideas and experiences.  I am so inspired by the beautiful and interesting blogs out there.  I love all things that make a house a home including:  cooking, crafting, decorating, organizing, entertaining and all the while saving money.  I hope you will stop by from time to time and visit.
